Is there an interesting story behind your username?
A katydid is a type of leaf-shaped insect that can be found in my part of the US; my name is Kate/Katie, so I just played with the spelling a little, and 717 is for my birthday (July 17). I've been using this name online since 2003 so no point changing it now!

Location and language(s):
Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. Journal is entirely in English (although I think I have a couple of old Spanish essays back in 2004/2005?)

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):
I'm 33, but I'll read anything

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:
Extreme misogyny/misogamy, frequent posts about alt-right or far-left politics, or if you're just a truly terrible person (rapist, abuser, child abuser, etc)

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.?
I do, although it's friends only. I also tag all of my entries, so it's easy to find posts about specific people.

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?
Due to privacy issues with my family 10-15 years ago, my profile is pretty vague and empty.

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:
The biggest thing currently is that I'm struggling after the end of a 4-year relationship; this comes up pretty frequently in my posts. I also work with family, which can make work-related things a little complicated. I've been in and out of therapy for depression for the past 20 years, but it's mainly manageable without medication; still something I write about sometimes though.

You mostly write about:
My day-to-day life - stories about things that happened at work, a general overview of what I've been doing socially, etc. When I'm going through lower periods of my life (like I am at present) I write a little bit more often so that I can track my moods etc.

You never or very rarely write about:
Politics

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?
It's entirely locked.

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?
No, but if I'm writing in-depth about a topic that could be triggering (eg: the #metoo movement) I'll put it behind a cut.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):
At least twice a week? Usually more?

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
I probably embed a photo or video a couple times a month, but it's usually just one - if there's more, they go behind a cut.

What do you enjoy most about journaling?
I like having the record of my life.

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?
Most of the year I read daily. I haven't been reading as much recently (combination of depression and a busy period at work), but I try to at least play catchup every couple of days.

You really enjoy reading about:
Most of the journals I currently follow are also kind of slice-of-life. I also enjoy reading about people's traditions and customs and back in the golden days of LJ I was friends with a LOT of fanfic writers

You have very little interest in reading about:
Nothing in particular comes to mind at the moment.

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
Eh.

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?
Honestly, I'm goon with either

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?
No, but I do unfriend people if they stop having active journals.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?
I try to leave comments with some kind of substance to them, and I'm more likely to comment on someone's journal if they've commented on mine.

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?
The couple of times that this has happened, I've just unfriended. If someone is unfriending me because I've offended them in some way I would want to know, but otherwise I don't really care.

AND LASTLY...Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?
I mainly just mention books/movies/shows/games/etc in passing.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends?
I'd prefer not to give friends access to people who aren't going to also give access to me, just a heads up!

Is there an interesting story behind your username?

It's from a song by Justin Hines. I just thought it was such a beautiful phrase - and silver is my favourite colour.

Location and language(s):

Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and English

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):

I'm 37

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:

Any bigotry of any sort. Homophobia/ageism/sexism/racism/ableism/classism are all big no-nos. Anti-Indigenous sentiment. Reposting my or others' locked entries. Bullying. Anti-vaccination/anti-science. Extreme religion of any sort.

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.?

I do! You can find that here.

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?

My profile isn't where I share personal info. Check my About Me post for that.

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:

I'm Indigenous - specifically Anishinaabe. I'm queer and chronically ill. I tend to use my journal as a venting place sometimes, but I put that stuff under cuts and I also put content warnings so that you can easily avoid it. Same goes for if I write about TV shows or other media - I use cuts and spoiler warnings. I write a lot about my life and try to be as honest and genuine as I can be.

You mostly write about:

My life, what's going on with me, things I'm into. It's really a personal journal for me.

You never or very rarely write about:

Fandom (though I am fannish), sex. I have another place for this on Tumblr, and also I tend to be into very niche things so I like to only add people who are into the same things I am there.

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?

It's locked. I have one public entry, and that's my About Me post.

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?

I don't use filters, but I do use cuts and content warnings. I might start in the future.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):

Mostly a few times a week. Sometimes less, sometimes I post every day. It depends on my mood.

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?

I do post photos, but I use cuts for a big photospam post. Otherwise no. And I kind of like to avoid a lot of that sort of thing on my flist, too. It feels kind of junky.

What do you enjoy most about journaling?

I process a lot through journalling and really make connections with my friends. I like having this little "harbour" to talk and meet new people and really connect. I was one of the very early adopters of Livejournal and I miss the community there sometimes. DW is slowly growing, though!

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?

At least twice a day.

You really enjoy reading about:

Your life, your family and friends, what you care about. In short, what I would like to know about my friends and care about hearing. I sometimes like reading about TV and fandom.

You have very little interest in reading about:

A lot of fandom or TV, or gaming posts. Not really interested in hearing about drugs or alcohol or how high you got, either, at least not on a regular basis. But I also skip over what I'm not in the mood for ;)

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?

Kind of junky. Not really interested in having that on my flist on a regular basis.

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?

Quality for sure. I really have learned a lot from my friends' comments. I like comments, but I don't expect them if you have nothing to say.

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?

No. I don't always comment, but I do read every entry on my flist (some more in-depth than others).

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?

I comment when I have something to say or want to provide support. If I don't agree or care about what you're writing about, I skip over it (unless it's one of my hot-button issues, but then I'd probably just unfriend as mentioned above).

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?

It depends. Sometimes if we've had no interaction, I'll unfriend without warning; other times we might talk about it. I rarely unfriend. I don't need to be notified if you unfriend me, but if I've made you angry or upset, I'd love to know so I can apologize and talk it out with you.

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?

I occasionally will post TV posts about Veronica Mars, Game of Thrones (when it was on), The Good Place, etc, but they're rare so not really. Like I said, I have other places to write about these things.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends?

I'm looking forward to getting to know like-minded folks and make new friends! :) Also, if you don't provide access to your journal and we've decided to mutually friend, I'm probably not going to provide access to mine. I'm looking for connections and getting to know people, and I'm not really interested in a non-reciprocal relationship :) Thanks!
