Is there an interesting story behind your username?
Springheel Jack, or Spring-Heeled Jack, was a more obscure oddity/alien/cryptid when I picked the name, but I think now many people have heard of him. It. Whatever. I only go by that name on DW/LJ, so if you come across another, it isn't me.
Location and language(s):
USA, near Nashville, TN. English.
I'm not a Southron, though; I'm a Midwesterner, with all that entails.
Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):
Late 40s.
Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:
Support for the murdering fascist in the White House is not going to go down well with me. Nor will transphobia.
That said, I don't mind conservatives per se. My bubble - we all have them - is not that exclusive. But thoughtful ones. Not partisan dummies. People trapped in the authoritarian personality. Whatever.
Feel free to chip in about anything you think I'm missing or mistaken about, but please don't lecture.
Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.?
No. I should make one.
Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?
It's there, but's not very specific. Right now it's just a few quotes I like.
List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:
I'm a socialist. (In fact I'm arguably what the right refers to as a cultural Marxist (even though that is in no way a real thing) - given that I'm something of a devotee of critical theory, and actually used to teach the frankfurt school.)
I studied philosophy.
I have depression and anxiety and ADHD and so on, and it sucks. (Insert the usual skepticism of the medicalization of mind and personality. )
I'm Jewish.
My dad died in February and I'm still reeling.
You mostly write about:
Lately: grief (I have a new one), cats (we have a new one), the garden (we have a new one), and the nightmare of contemporary capitalist existence (that's of long standing).
Mental health in general.
Aspects of contemporary leftism, often aspects I don't agree with.
Of course, covid-19 and the quarantine.
You never or very rarely write about:
Fannish stuff.
Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?
Locked. But for purposes of this communiqué I will unlock a few entries so you have some idea what you're getting into.
Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?
No. I'm not interesting enough to have any use for those.
Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):
Lately it's maybe weekly. But I'd like to post more. Famous last words.
Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
No, but they appear occasionally.
What do you enjoy most about journaling?
Organizing my own thoughts. Getting to know other people and their lives. I've been on LJ and DW for many years and have made some close friends.
How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?
Daily.
You really enjoy reading about:
I usually skip fannish stuff, and fic, and those fic contests like LJ Idol (or whatever it's called over here) but I read the rest.
You have very little interest in reading about:
Fandoms. Fic. Celebrities. Anything about Donald Trump.
Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
I'm less interested if this is most of your content.
When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?
I don't understand the question. Surely it's always quality. Nobody wants a hundred pointless comments just for the number.
Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?
No.
What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?
If I have something to say.
When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?
I likely won't bother, but I probably would do it without warning.
Go ahead and unfriend me if you want. I don't care.
AND LASTLY
Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?
No. I may write about a book, movie, or show, but I don't write frequently about any book, movie, or show.
There is one possible exception, in that I'm a soccer fan, and I support the local team, but until I can go to games again it's unlikely I'll mention it.
Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends?
I am not a sunny optimist.
You can just go ahead and add (if you feel that vocation), no need to ask. DW will alert me when you do.
