With another wave of incoming refugees from LJ, I thought I should pop up and be visible for a moment – then recede again into the backcountry. I’m not necessarily looking for friends; I’m just letting people know about my blog. I do kinda miss the large circles of friends we had back in the heady, prime days of LJ. Anything to promote those sorts of connections in Dreamwidth is a plus.
Is there an interesting story behind your username?
I don’t know that it’s interesting... but my username comes from the code name for the Dirty Pair. This is meaningful only if you’re into anime. I Explain My Username at my personal website.
Location and language(s):
United States, Oregon (Portland metropolitan area). English.
Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.): 60s
Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:
Because my Dreamwidth blog is public, “unfriending” just means I might stop subscribing to your journal. And I drop journals same as I would drop magazine subscriptions – when I’m skipping content more than I’m reading (and enjoying) it. My whim. I’ll definitely drop toxic or delusional blogs.
Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.?
My personal website has the most complete About Me page.
Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?
My Dreamwidth Profile is up-to-date, but the Interests section is quite old and needs a big cleanup. The Interests aren’t entirely wrong, though.
List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:
I’m a progressive / left-leaning Boomer. (In spite of what the media paints, there are a lot of us, especially in the Left Coast states.) I’m totally an otaku, so if you aren’t interested in anime, there are a lot of my posts you’ll need to skip. Some people may care that I’m trans, but I hardly ever write about it in my blog. I transitioned back in 1999.
You mostly write about:
Anime. Photography. Random technology. Random stuff I’m doing.
You never or very rarely write about:
I don’t generally write about work or my family.
Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?
All my posts nowadays are 100% public, so I haven't been granting anyone access. You don’t have to ask any permissions – just subscribe, and you see it all. Or unsubscribe any time you get bored. I don't mind either way, and I'm not tracking subscribers or taking anything personally.
And, inversely, I subscribe or unsubscribe from other blogs just to keep my reading list interesting. It's nothing personal if I unsubscribe. I'm just managing my reading / spare time. 😇
Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?
I haven’t used filters in a long, long time. On the opposite front, I try to keep my own posts well tagged. The only weird thing is that I lump all manga posts under the Anime tag.
Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):
Because I work full-time, I post infrequently on weekdays and more than once a day on weekends. I average at least 400 posts a year, so on average I post daily. In reality, it’s a lumpy distribution.
Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
Contains photos. My photos, usually.
What do you enjoy most about journaling?
I have a compulsion to write, so journaling is good exercise. I do like having the accumulation of personal history that I can search / reread / reference. I’d like to be a better storyteller.
How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?
Daily.
You really enjoy reading about:
Anime (of course). Writing. Hobbies. Interesting ideas.
You have very little interest in reading about:
Hmm. Dunno. Anything can be interesting, if written well. Anything can be boring, if written badly.
Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
I detest videos. I feel like they hold me hostage for the duration. Animated gifs annoy me too. I want my reading pages to be static and skimmable. I generally skip memes, and I hesitate to click on links unless I have high trust in them.
When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?
Quality, if anything. I don’t mind if no one comments on my posts. And I’m often too busy to comment back.
Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?
I don’t grant special access – so I don’t remove special access. People who want to read my public blog are free to do so; they don’t need my permission.
What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?
If I have time and I can add value, I might comment. But I’m more of a lurker than a commenter. I like to read magazines, but I don’t write letters to the editor. Maybe I’ll have more time when I retire.
When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?
If I subscribe to a journal, and things don’t click, I’ll unsubscribe without notice. If people grant me access to their journal and then remove access at their whim, that’s their prerogative. They don’t have to send me a note.
AND LASTLY
Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?
I pretty much write about anime, and that seems to be a fandom thing. I don’t see many movies or TV shows or read many books nowadays – so I guess the answer is no. I suppose I could note that I’m a Trekkie. There are Certain Anime Series that I obsess over and do write about more often than other shows.
Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends?
I don’t think so... except Dreamwidth makes me happy!
