Is there an interesting story behind your username?

That'd depend what kinda stuff you're interested in. If you are interested in Pretentious Literature (TM), then, I guess so, very slightly (it's from Invitation to a Beheading by Nabokov, which, if you are interested in Pretentious Literature (TM), you may know already), and you might also be interested to know that I originally had a livejournal account (that I didn't really use) under the name pierre_menard.

Location and language(s):

Somewhere in Hastings County, Ontario, Canada; English.

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):

We'll probably get along better if this isn't very important to you, but to save us the trouble of trying to find out each other's ages (because of course I'd be curious about yours, too): 40s.

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:

I have a hard time imagining that anyone who would want to read my journal would post anything that would make me want to unfriend them.

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.?

Nah. I like to let the work speak for itself, man.

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?

Well ... I actually updated it sometime this year. For present purposes, yes, it is useful.

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:

I guess you might like to know that the first post you read from me may or may not be totally unrepresentative of any other post you will ever read from me, and anyway there is a good chance it will be largely unlike the post either before or after it if not both.

It might also be important for you to know about me that I know that what I have just said is more likely to seem to be the case to me than it is to anyone else.

Also, if you don't care for irony, you will probably find me upsetting.

You mostly write about:

Most people would get the wrong idea here, but: in the last couple of years, the bible. And if you did not immediately get the wrong idea, we would probably get along swimmingly. Anyway, that may or may not be a passing phase, and my interests and periodic obsessions are broad enough to bore pretty much anyone. In particular, almost anyone interested in most of what else I write about will be bored to death by my writing about sports. Actually, come to think of it, I've taken to posting poems at least once a month, and given my sporadic posting, poetry may now be the thing I most often post.

You never or very rarely write about:

I dunno, Australian Rules Football? Korean TV? Pop star gossip?

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?

For now it is entirely public, because I <3ed the old internet where everything was public and nobody knew you were a dog.

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?

Nope.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):

The stats say normally 1-3 times per month. But what I use it for changes from time to time, and my posting frequency changes along with that.

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?

Frequently? No.

What do you enjoy most about journaling?

I mostly use my journal to work stuff out for myself in writing, and put stuff in a place where I can easily find it.

I am not entirely sure why I do this publicly, but the main reason I keep coming back to is that I like looking at other people do it.

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?

More than daily, which is funny, because presently there is, on average, a new post probably less than weekly.

You really enjoy reading about:

I guess I like reading stuff that tells me, or points me toward, important stuff that I didn't already know or think and that I have good reason to believe is true. The thing is, "important stuff" can be "about" more or less anything.

You have very little interest in reading about:

See above? I said that I don't post about Korean TV because a guy I know posts quite a bit of stuff about Korean TV. I couldn't care less about Korean TV per se, but what he says about Korean TV is often very interesting.

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?

Regularly? I mean, probably no, but for a time I used my own journal pretty much as a photo blog, so, you know, it depends.

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?

Quality, absolutely.

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?

This whole idea is foreign to me.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?

I think I have largely successfully curbed my old usenetty habit of showing off my wit and wisdom at every opportunity. I currently have basically two active dw friends, so the sample is too small to identify a general approach to my commenting on other journals, but elsewhere on the net these days I delete a large majority of comments I write without posting them. I try to be careful to contribute something positive.

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?

I have never unfriended anyone, that I recall. But again, very small sample. Unless we have a RL relationship I care about, I'd probably find it weird and unpleasant if you sent me a note rather than just unfriending me.

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?

Well, there's the bible thing. Otherwise, I do make reference to books and movies a lot. I guess in particular, historically, in terms of books, I've referred to Plato more than anything else. There are certain touchstone movies that I don't necessarily write about frequently but I keep coming back to--The Tree of Life and Babette's Feast, for instances.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends?

Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?
