Hello! I’ve been on this site for a little while now, but mostly keeping to myself…I’m slowly opening up and trying to connect with people, though, so here’s a step in that direction!

Location and language(s):
Originally from the northeast US, but I’ve been living in China for the past four years. This summer I’m moving to my partner’s hometown in Romania. I speak a bit of Romanian, but hopefully a bit more soon.

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):

Late 30s

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:

The usual bigotries, conspiracy theories, etc.

You mostly write about:

Teaching (I’m a high school English lit teacher)

Books (mostly literary fiction, essays/autofiction, and “world literature”)

Spiritual stuff (dabblings in tarot and Quakerism)

Current events (not so much US politics, though; mostly the war in Ukraine these days)

Gender stuff

You never or very rarely write about:

Fandom, genre fiction (except the occasional rom-com novel), video games, really heavy personal stuff

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?

Locked

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):

Just about daily

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?

No

What do you enjoy most about journaling?

Understanding myself a little better

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?

Daily

You really enjoy reading about:

Teaching; books people are reading; sweet moments in people’s days

You have very little interest in reading about:

Mostly the same things I rarely write about

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?

I haven’t really had many friends on here, but I think I will unfriend people if it seems like we’re not really interacting with each other’s journals or if I feel like the content they post about isn’t really for me

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?

I’d like to comment more! It feels a little weird, though, to just dip into a person’s life out of nowhere, so I’ll probably be a cautious commenter for a while

Feel free to send me a message if you’re interested in checking out my journal for a bit, and feel free to unsubscribe if you’re not feeling it!

Is there an interesting story behind your username?
I was pretty crazy about Supernatural when I started my blog on LJ and I decided to keep the name here so it is easy for friends to recognize.  Not that I don't still love the show but other things are taking up more time and the fire has died down to a nice glower - the kind you might roast marshmallows over.

Location and language(s):
Japan - I am a Canadian citizen that has lived in Japan almost all of my life - all except four years of uni.  I can read/write posts in both languages but am much more at home with English.

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):
50s.  Just turned 50 last year.

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:
Rudeness toward anyone here or any of my friends (circle).

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.?
I do answer questions to a meme every week and you can get a sense of me just from reading one of the entries.  There is a more detailed intro for friends only.

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?
The profile is what I moved over from LJ.  I've tried to update it a bit.

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:
I am a mother of 3 humans (now 21, 20, 14) and a shiba inu (5). I live in Japan with my family and have my own English language school, where I mostly teach children from 1 yr old and over.  I recently lost 37 pounds and my new passion is getting fit and sculpting my body with as little effort as possible :)  Oh, I also belong to a small choir group of moms so I post about that too.

You mostly write about:
Myself and my everyday life.  LOL.  I will have an entry devoted to Supernatural once in a while, but now that it is on the back burner, I talk more about books, other TV shows and movies that I am watching as well stuff that happened during the week - in my family, for my work etc.

You never or very rarely write about:

politics and sports.   I am really not interested in them at all.

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?
A mix.  I will lock entries that have especially personal photos or content.

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?
Fandom posts will be public - you can skip by it if you are not interested.  The rest of the above examples will most likely be locked.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):
Every week or two weeks at least.  Sometimes several times in a day.

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
Memes (as in questions), picspams sometimes when I am feeling low and need a pick-me-up, I love making gifs so gifs, photos and sometimes videos, yes.

What do you enjoy most about journaling?
I especially enjoy looking back on my posts and remembering what I went through.  It is nice to have conversations with others too on various topics of interest.

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?
Whenever I come in to write, I usually check my "reading page" as well.

You really enjoy reading about:
I enjoy reading about the same sort of thing I write about.

You have very little interest in reading about:
Sports teams/fantalk or politics.  I don't mind reading about personal challenges of an athlete or as a part of a person's day but I cannot contribute much to a discussion on a team, league or sports event.

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?
"Linkspams" I may not be too excited about.  But everything else sounds great.

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?
I think the quality of a comment often depends on the content of the entry... sometimes there is reallly nothing substantial you can say.  But it is nice to see someone just pop in even for a brief comment.

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?
No, as long as it is clear they are reading.  I really have a hard time with unfriending people.  I can't.  But I don't think very well of them either.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?
I really wish this site had a heart function because sometimes, I just can't think of anything to say even after reading the post.  I try to pop in and at least show that I am reading though.

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?
I really can't unfriend... I think it's only happened once.  I will probably send a note.  I think I would really appreciate a note.

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?
I watch a lot of shows and have a lot of favorites.  Other than Supernatural, some that I have watched/read more than once are the Outlander series, Riverdale, the Magicians, Vikings, SHIELD, Titans, The Witcher, Sherlock, The Shooter, Sense 8, the Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones...

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends?

Is there an interesting story behind your username?
I think it was college, a friend had nicknamed me Smitten (Smitha is hard to nickname - so it evolved from Smithi, to Smitty, to what sounded like Smitten)... and then I looked up if it meant anything and when found it did, well, it had to be done smitten-by-you! ^_^ so that was my creativity back in the 90s/early 2000s! ;)

Location and language(s):I currently live in Arlington VA, but grew up outside Hyderabad (India), Rome (Italy), Singapore, Honolulu (USA), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) before landing here 14 years ago. I call Bangalore home as well.

Age range (e.g., 20s, 30s, etc.):40s

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:I haven't unfriended anyone - at least didn't initiate it. I will probably at some point, if I notice unfriend those who have unfriended me.

Deal breakers are the usual stuff that falls under racists, jerks, anti-science, etc. Likely to unfriend me before I even bother. I do think, most of us think we are not racist, but I do tire of folks who don't take time to reflect about the biases they have and then talk about reverse-racism - that likely would be my deal breaker. Because that's not how this works. Library is a wonderful resource. I am more patient, in person, but LJ/DW is where I come to vent and not have to explain/educate.

Do you have an “About Me” post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.? yes. It's in the profile - a more detailed one is for those who add me / add me back.

Is your profile up to date or at all useful? it's up to date. Whether it's useful or not - that's determined by the reader, no? So, you let me know! ;)

List a few things you think it’s important new friends know about you right away:

  • N is my husband, D is my 11.5yo daughter.

  • A lot of the stuff I share here is probably stuff you wouldn't hear from me right off the bat, if we met in person. I am rather soft-spoken and I am not as open in person / speak my mind if we were to randomly meet somewhere. I do tend to surprise people (in person) - I look younger than I am; I don't fit their image of an Indian / Latina / Black / Muslim / Arab - I have been guessed as all the above different times in my life. I am Indian in origin, but a mix of all the places I have lived in. My education is very American-centric - which bugs me and amuses me.

You mostly write about: my life, my observations, current events that affect me, travel / weekend activities

You never or very rarely write about: my marriage/relationship stuff. I occasionally write/complain about N here. But I try not to too much, as he doesn't get to share his side of the story. And well, guess there are parts that I keep private.

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked? Mostly friends-only. Every now and then there's a public post. No reason. Just became a habit.

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g., fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?I used to do that on LJ. But I don't have the energy. Now, I try to keep the topics in the subject line, so people can skip if not interested.

Your posting frequency (e.g., daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):It's been quite frequent Jan-Mar - almost daily in March. I think in the summer it tapers off a bit and picks up in late fall.

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc.? surveys, like this - it's a break from work. :D Photos - I do her photo a day prompts. And every now and then I will remember to share it here.

What do you enjoy most about journaling? It's a place for me to keep track of what I did. Every now and then I will pick a random day from the past to see what I was doing. :) I do love seeing comments to - I learn so much.

How often do you read your friends list (e.g., daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?
I try to read a little everyday. But really, whenever I have time.

You really enjoy reading about: People's lives. I love reading people's stories. What is going through their minds. Their struggles, thoughts, life.

You have very little interest in reading about: fandom things. Even if it is about something I like, I probably skim through it or skip it entirely. I like reading about people and their journeys through life.

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc.? I like photos. And I will take a look at the others. I don't have thoughts. I know this is a space that serves different purposes for folks and so, take it or leave it, right?

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more—quality or quantity? Quality. It's nice to get a comment at least once a year (?) just to know who is reading. But really, I don't keep track of that.

Do you unfriend people who don’t comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly? How would I know if they are reading my journal regularly if they don't comment? So, yeah - I don't unfriend since I wouldn't know.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals? I comment when I make a connection, have something to say, or when I feel something. I probably don't comment as much as I want to. But I do read and catch up on posts - then I might not comment as much.

When you friend someone, but things don’t really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances? With the handful of times I have unfriended someone - I haven't told them I was. They probably hadn't noticed and if they asked, I would share - just likely we didn't connect. And that's fine.

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren’t things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about—not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?I do write about books I read and shows/movies that I watch. I don't want to list that here.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share with new friends?
